recommends specific jewelry insurers.
In order of importance, your AFTER PURCHASE MUSTS:
- APPRAISAL
- INSURE
- KEEP IN A SAFE PLACE UNTIL PRESENTED
- BE PREPARED TO SIZE THE RING
- CLEAN THE RING PERIODICALLY
- CHECK PRONGS EVERY 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR
- ENJOY!!!!
1. IF an appraisal was not provided at the point of purchase, you should immediately have it appraised by an unbiased 3rd party. This could be an insurer such as BRITECO or a local appraisal company which may easily be searched on the internet within your specific geographic location OR you may go to a local jeweler that offers appraisals for a fee. You MAY need this appraisal as many insurers require it before insurance can bind.
2. As mentioned above, choose an insurance company and have the ring insured immediately. Wearing a diamond ring is not unsafe but as with anything that we wear, it is exposed and can be banged, damaged, lost, or stolen. The best way to ensure that all is not lost, have your ring insured.
3. Most of those who purchase a diamond ring, do not present it immediately. That means it must be kept for safekeeping. We recommend that it be kept in a secure location, either in a home safe or in a bank safety deposit box. If neither of these is realistic for you, we suggest keeping it in the safest location you can find!
4. Once the ring is presented, it is often the case that a ring must be sized. The quickest and easiest solution is to either have the supplier of the ring resize it for you(a retail outlet and e-commerce site will generally do this for free if you purchased the ring from jewelers mutual or pay your local jeweler a small fee and this can be handled. We suggest only going to a reputable operation to have this or any work done with your ring.
5. There are many solutions available for ring cleaning. You may search online and easily procure a cleaning solution for jewelry…..a toothbrush in conjunction with the solution is the best fit. Of course, you can always purchase an ultrasonic and a steamer BUT that may be a bit overdoing it. 😊 Remember, it is easy to remove dirt/oils from the top of your diamond. It is a touch more difficult to clean underneath the stone as it is often cradled between the prongs and the lower bezel of the ring(this is where the toothbrush comes in!). Keep in mind, that a diamond is 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness….you won’t damage it with a toothbrush. 😊
6. On occasion, diamonds become “loose” in their setting. Sometimes you can even hear it jingle in its setting. This is NOT UNCOMMON and can happen if you have banged your ring, exercised with your ring on, caught it in your clothing, pulled etc. Keep in mind, prongs are ON TOP of the diamond and are exposed and as such, can be worn down, pulled, loosened, or even broken. You should have your ring checked every 6 months to a year to ensure that your diamond is secure.
7. ENJOY!! Very simple, these are the best years of your life, ENJOY!!
