CHECK THE PRONGS

How can we tell if a diamond is loose? There are several ways. The worst is if you look down and there is a giant space between the prongs, YIKES!

Well..let's hope that doesn't happen and for real, that is very rare. There would have to be some serious trauma to the ring for the center diamond to pop out.

So let's stop scaring you here and discuss a loose diamond in a setting. Here we are specifically talking about the larger or larger diamonds in your setting. Below are some ways you can tell if your diamond is loose.

1. Put the ring next to your ear and gently shake it back and forth. If you hear a clicking sound, this means something is loose and the ring should be taken to a jeweler for repair. It usually means a prong has just been slightly pulled up and needs to be tightened. Sometimes it can be indicative of a greater problem, so always have a professional put it under the scope AND DO NOT WEAR THE RING UNTIL YOU HAVE IT CHECKED!

2. Take an eraser tip and put it on top of the diamond. Move the eraser tip clockwise and counterclockwise to see if there is any movement.

3. A bit harder if you have larger fingertips, but you can also try to turn or move the diamonds with your index and thumb; this is the hardest method.

4. If you have any concerns and can't determine if the stone or stones are loose, we highly recommend you go to a reputable local jeweler to have the ring checked.

Preferably one who has an onsite repair area so the ring does not have to leave their store. When it comes to the smaller diamonds in pave settings or smaller diamond eternity bands, the shaking method is the easiest, and then the pencil eraser tip. These are much harder to notice because they are so small. Again, if you feel uncomfortable and that something may be wrong, then take it to a trusted store.
