DIAMOND GUIDE BY SIZE

DIAMOND GUIDE BY SIZE

YES, size does matter! We are not saying size matters to you or your fiance-to-be, but we are saying that size matters as far as a diamond's value/cost. The larger the diamond, the more expensive it will be in comparison to that of a similar quality, smaller stone.Diamond Stud Earringshave noted in other areas of the site that size and weight are NOT THE SAME THING.In this section, we endeavor to explain what size actually translates to when it comes to carat weight.

Many believe that a 1 carat diamond is larger than a .90-carat diamond. Certainly makes sense to us, and maybe to you? The reality is far different and easy to explain. Carat is simply a unit of measurement of weight. A 1 carat diamond weighs 200 milligrams. There are 100 points to 1 carat(75 points = ¾ carat, 100 points = 1ct, and so on), none of this tells us the actual size of a diamond…it is strictly a weight measurement.

When we refer to a group of 20 x 1 carat round brilliant cut diamonds, we may ask “What size is this parcel?” the response would be “20 carats” (20 stones * 1ct). When analyzing this 20 stone parcel, we will weigh every individual stone, color grade each stone, millimeter each stone, clarity grade each stone and of course assess the cut of each stone. A 1 carat round stone may measure as little as 5.7 millimeter in diameter to possibly 6.6 millimeter in diameter.

The MILLIMETER = SIZE of the diamond. The stones measurements are directly related to the CUT of a diamond. A poorly cut 1 carat round diamond with an EXTREMELY THICK GIRDLE and HIGH CROWN will measure below 6mm in diameter. A TOP PROPORTIONED 1 carat round diamond will measure approximately 6.4mm in diameter. Simply, TWO DIAMONDS THAT WEIGH THE SAME CAN BE completely different SIZES with one being MUCH LARGER THAN THE OTHER!

Another example would be a comparison of a top proportioned 2 carat round diamond and a 2 carat poorly cut round diamond. The well proportioned 2ct round diamond will measure just over 8 millimeters in diameter. A poorly proportioned 2ct diamond is as low as 7.7 millimeters…. anything BELOW 8mm is priced at a discount IN THE WHOLESALE diamond world as it will face up like a 1.90 carat diamond or even smaller, YET IT WEIGHS 2ct.! Diamond Stud Earrings would much prefer to have an excellent cut 1.80 that measures 7.80 millimeter and has fire, brilliance and scintillation in comparison to a lumpy 2ct diamond that measures the same diameter and will undoubtedly have inferior light performance(brilliance, fire and scintillation)!
