A DIAMOND REPORT EXPLAINED
A diamond grading report is a document that describes the quality and characteristics of an unmounted(loose) diamond based on the 4Cs: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. It also includes a diagram(schematic or plot) of the diamond’s clarity features and a representation of its proportions. A diamond grading report is issued by a gemological laboratory such as GIA after a thorough review of the diamond. It can help you verify the authenticity and value of a diamond.
A diamond grading report IS NOT an appraisal. Valuation of a diamond may be heavily influenced by the grading report but it IS NOT the sole determinant of value.
GIA currently issues the Diamond Dossier for loose natural diamonds between 0.15 and .99 carats in the D-to-Z color range. The Diamond Dossier is currently not issued for synthetics, simulants, mounted diamonds, diamonds that have undergone unstable treatments such as fracture filling or coating, or diamonds that have been HPHT processed. Any evidence of other treatment is prominently disclosed in the report.
