The comparison

The headline window is only half the policy.

Check your exact order before counting the days. We checked these published U.S. terms on October 15, 2026. International orders, special agreements, and individual products need their own answers. Save the policy and get the seller's answer in writing when you order.

Return windows and the restrictions that change them
Retailer and official policyPublished window and startImportant exclusions or conditions
Whiteflash30 days for eligible branded natural categories. 10 days for other diamonds, including lab diamonds. Starts when available for pickup or delivery under the policy.Custom, special order, modified designs, and full eternity rings have exclusions. Upgrade diamonds are not refundable.
Brian Gavin15 days. Day one is receipt.Custom, bezel, hand engraved, and specified third party settings are final sale. Confirm whether commissioning the setting changes diamond eligibility.
Blue Nile30 days from shipment.Custom, personalized, engraved, subsequently resized, upgrade, clearance, and final sale purchases are excluded.
Brilliant Earth30 days from availability for shipment or pickup.Custom, altered, resized, personalized, and other listed categories are excluded. Engraved rings have a removal charge; engraved fine jewelry has different eligibility.

I'd take a shorter window I can use over a longer one I've misunderstood. Can you receive the ring, have it inspected, and decide in time? Our retailer reviews cover what to check about the diamonds alongside these terms.

Count the days

Your proposal date does not start the clock.

A return period tied to shipment or availability can run while the ring is in transit or waiting for collection. Putting the box away for a surprise does not extend it. Arrange your inspection before you place the order, especially if you want an independent check.

Shipment based example

A fictional ring ships on October 1 and arrives on October 4. A shipment based policy starts counting from October 1, not October 4. Ask the seller for the exact last ship back date.

Receipt based example

Under a receipt based policy, arrival starts the period. Confirm whether you must request authorization, postmark the return, or have it received by the deadline.

Book the check before the box arrives.

Book your independent inspection before delivery. Leave time to review the findings and follow the seller's return instructions. GIA's photo shows a gemstone examination with a loupe. The seller's written policy sets your deadline.

Get the final return date in writing. These examples explain the timing, not your personal deadline. Follow the seller's authorization and shipping instructions. A return number alone doesn't mean you've sent the ring back in time.

Shipping and refunds

Free delivery doesn't always mean a free return.

Return shipping costs and instructions
RetailerWhat to check before sending it back
WhiteflashRefunds deduct applicable return shipping fees. Obtain authorization and the approved insured shipping instructions.
Brian GavinOriginal complimentary shipping and insurance are deducted. Follow its authorized insured return process and postmark deadline.
Blue NileTwo complimentary returns per customer per year. Its approved label includes insurance; other routes can add costs.
Brilliant EarthFree return label with insurance when you follow the supplied packing and shipping instructions.

Keep the paperwork and packaging. Send back everything the policy requires, then keep the carrier receipt and tracking. A missing grading report or damage can reduce or prevent a refund. And a delivered parcel doesn't mean the refund has been processed yet.

Size and customization

A resizing benefit is not a second return window.

Published resizing benefits, subject to design limits
RetailerResizing terms to confirm
WhiteflashOne complimentary sizing on most rings within one year. Customer pays shipping and insurance. Design and range restrictions apply.
Brian GavinOne complimentary resize within one year, up or down one full size. Customer pays shipping and insurance; eternity designs have restrictions.
Blue NileOne eligible resize within six months, up or down two sizes if design permits. Resizing after purchase affects return eligibility.
Brilliant EarthOne complimentary resize within 60 days, or up to one year within the design’s sizing range. Custom or modified designs have separate fees and restrictions.

Resizing changes the ring.

After welding

GIA's bench examples show a prepared shank and the joined area after welding. Resizing involves physical work on the ring. Before authorizing it, ask the seller what that change does to your return eligibility. The policy answer comes from the seller's written terms.

Confirm the size before approving a change. An eternity band, tension setting, or detailed design can have a narrow adjustment range or none at all. If you are still deciding whether to keep the ring, ask how resizing affects that decision before sending it to the bench.

How I would use this

Plan the inspection before you pay.

  • Ask whether the diamond and setting each qualify for a refund.
  • Write down the start date and final authorized ship back date.
  • Ask what changes if the order includes custom work or engraving.
  • Confirm shipping, insurance, missing document fees, and refund deductions.
  • Schedule report matching and a visual inspection inside the window.

Don't order several pieces assuming you can keep one and send the rest back. Brilliant Earth restricts that practice. Read its comparative purchasing rules first. Compare the listings and videos before making that plan.

You can compare full quotes from Whiteflash and Blue Nile without ordering several rings. If a term still isn't clear, bring the written quote to your free consultation.

Planning a later trade up? Read our upgrade policy comparison separately. A purchase made through an upgrade program can have a very different return route.

Once the order arrives, use the after delivery inspection checklist to check identity, appearance, and workmanship before your return deadline.

Buyer questions

Your questions, answered

Which diamond retailer has the best return policy?

The one that gives you time to check the ring you're actually buying. I'd look at when the clock starts, what is excluded, and the insured return cost before picking a winner.

Does a 30 day return period start when I receive the ring?

Not always. Blue Nile counts from shipment, and Brilliant Earth from availability for shipment or pickup. Whiteflash also uses availability rules. Brian Gavin states receipt as day one.

Can I return a custom engagement ring?

Get that answer before anyone starts work. Custom orders are a major exclusion across these sellers. Ask for written terms for both the setting and center diamond.

Can I resize first and decide whether to keep the ring later?

Ask first. A free resize doesn't extend the refund window. Changing the ring can also change whether you can return it.
