Three different promises

Read the exact policy for the exact stone.

I checked the retailer sources on October 23, 2026. Policies change. Confirm the current terms in writing before purchase, especially for custom settings, sale items, or an order shipped outside the United States.

Return, upgrade, and resale answer different buyer questions
TermWhat it meansThe buyer question
ReturnYou send an eligible purchase back within a stated window for a refund or exchange.Does this exact diamond and finished ring qualify?
Upgrade or trade upA retailer gives credit toward another eligible diamond under its rules. What must the next stone cost, and must origin match?
ResaleA separate buyer pays cash for your used stone. Is there a real cash offer, not just store credit?

Store credit is not cash back. Work out what happens if your next ring has a bigger stone, a different budget, or a different diamond origin.

Two current examples

The upgrade paths work differently.

Blue Nile

Like for like origin.

As of this review, Blue Nile's FAQ says eligible GIA or IGI graded colorless stones can receive upgrade credit toward a new diamond priced at least twice the original, on a like for like basis. Natural goes to natural. Lab grown goes to lab grown. Blue Nile also states exclusions for returns and says the upgrade program is not a cash buyback.

Ritani

Natural diamonds, with a larger next purchase.

Ritani's published services page says its diamond upgrade service is available for earth grown natural diamonds and that lab diamonds are not eligible. Its replacement diamond must cost at least 3.5 times the original diamond. That is a much bigger next purchase. Put that number into your plan before calling the upgrade benefit valuable. The policy still has to fit the ring you want.

Your plan matters

Choose the policy that fits the purchase you intend.

Future plans and the policy question to settle now
If you expect to...Ask before buying
Keep the stone indefinitelyWhich diamond looks best today at the full price? If you never use the upgrade, it adds nothing to this purchase.
Upgrade within the same originIs this report and stock item eligible, and what must the replacement cost?
Switch from lab to natural laterCan the credit cross origins? Do not assume it can.
Buy a custom ringWill the finished order still qualify for a return? Get the answer in writing.

Suppose you prefer the visual size a lab grown diamond gives you today and have no plan to trade it later. Compare the actual lab stones, their reports, and the total ring quote. If a future natural upgrade matters to you, an origin restricted policy can change which starting purchase fits that plan. That helps you plan the next purchase. It does not tell you what anyone will pay for your stone later.

The natural versus lab guide handles the origin choice. Our return policy comparison and upgrade policy comparison cover the retailer terms in more detail.

Price the setting work before you upgrade.

Setting designed for a 0.50 carat center

Diamond too large for the setting

Credit does not make the next stone fit. These illustrations follow GIA’s setting examples. The first shows a setting designed for a 0.50 carat center diamond. The second shows a stone that is too large, with the prongs spread apart. Ask for a quote covering any new head, mounting, and setting work before you count the upgrade as a saving.

The first diagram shows a setting that GIA describes as designed for a 0.50 carat center diamond. The second shows a diamond too large for its setting, with the prongs widened. A jeweler must assess the actual replacement stone and mounting. These drawings do not establish upgrade eligibility, return rights, a replacement price, or the origin of either depicted stone.

Before checkout

Get eligibility in writing.

  • Name the exact diamond and report in the eligibility request.
  • Ask whether the credit can cross from lab grown to natural.
  • Confirm the required replacement price and what the credit covers.
  • Check how custom work or resizing changes return eligibility.
  • Save the dated policy with the order confirmation.

Name the exact report and diamond origin.

Natural diamond, GIA Diamond Dossier

Laboratory grown assessment

GIA sample source

Here are GIA’s sample Diamond Dossier for a natural diamond and its current colorless lab grown assessment. Use your exact report number and stock item when asking about upgrade eligibility. The retailer sets the terms. Neither sample promises upgrade credit or a resale price.

Send both complete offers if the policy changes which ring makes sense for you.

Buyer questions

Your questions, answered

Can I trade a lab diamond for a natural diamond later?

Ask the retailer before you count on it. Blue Nile's terms in this review keep natural with natural and lab grown with lab grown. Get the answer for your exact purchase in writing.

Does an upgrade policy guarantee I get my money back?

No. You get credit toward another eligible diamond, usually a more expensive one. Selling your stone for cash is a different conversation.

Do all 30 day returns cover a custom ring?

No. Check the specific exclusions and when the clock starts. Ask about the diamond and the setting together.
